12/10/2023 0 Comments Stockfish vs carlsenIn reality, anything playing at a 3000 level couldn't lose. We've seen Fischer play almost perfect at 2785 and Kasparov play almost perfect at 2851. I don't buy into any entity having a 3000+ rating. However in a correspondence game I expect most GMs could defeat an engine. Having said that, its unlikely that a human player can defeat a strong engine in a classical game. ![]() This is incorrect, engine ratings are not FIDE ratings therefore they are not comparable. I am not 100% sure how contempt is implemented in most engines, because it could be implemented deterministically or nondeterministically, there certainly exist some engines that will use contempt in a way that crushes humans, so even if the answer is "yes Magnus can draw stockfish" it would be somewhat meaningless because he managed to draw an engines that doesn't care about him and is optimized for something else. Both engines are above 3300. There is also Contempt (which isn't in the newest Stockfish build, since it wasn't possible to have it at the same time as NNUE) which is basically how much an engine wants to avoid a draw. Multithreading makes them none deterministic, which is the biggest thing, but also Monte Carlo Tree Search (which Alpha Zero used a variant of and I believe Lc0 does as well) isn't deterministic. So back to the original point: Engines aren't (all) deterministic. That effectively reduces the same size from 1000 games to idk like 6 and makes any ranking much harder.Īlso it is much more exciting to see the engines actually go for the throat/struggle to defend instead of going for an easy draw for the hundreth time in a row. Magnus could just memorize a line and the moves stockfish would play and play the same line over and over again.įirst let me adress the second part: The reason computer tournaments like the TCEC don't all start in the opening position but instead use an opening book is because if they didn't use an opening book the strongest engines would draw a LOT of games, not necessarily in the same lines, but a lot of games would be drawn. Magnus can most likely beat a computer playing at depth 20 by finding a line the engines struggle to understand at low depth. ![]() This highly depends on the computer used. For instance, iirc alphazero was spontaneously going for the Berlin when playing against itself, and I suspect Magnus could semi - reliably hold the draw in that endgame.Īlso, I don’t know why people are saying the engine would play instantly against Magnus. Engines are built to play the best move, but for black, the best move leads to a draw: it is much harder to develop an engine that is ready to go for a worse position to create chances as black. The engine is likely to go for a very drawing line. Secondly, it is far from impossible for Magnus to draw with white, with correct preparation. It’s likely that Carlsen did not actually play a single move in that game, and already knew everything in advance. Hope this gives you an idea of the correlation between centipawn and WDL ratio.Įdit: to clarify, these findings are an estimate from stockfish 14.1 and not actual data used from real game results that would indeed be interesting!įirst off, 99.7 accuracy just means that the players were well prepared. Last, notice the difference in draw ratio by going from +2.0 to +3.0. +0.0 is basically a dead drawn endgame, therefore having a lower loss percentage for white than for a position in which white is up a third of a centipawn for example. It is always an estimate based on position (opening, middle game or endgame matters!) and search depth. There is no direct mapping of centipawns to WDL ratio. Notice how the winning odds for black increase for the first few centipawns advantage for white, because of the position. I used the stockfish app from the macOS App Store and to give you an idea, these are my findings:Īnything over +4 is W: 99%, D: 0.1%, L: 0.0% Stockfish 14.1 now supports win, draw and loss (WDL) ratio depending on the position.
